Improvement of food knowledge in patients with type 2 diabetes secondary to an educational intervention
Abstract
Within the integral treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes is the modification of their lifestyle that consists of: adequate nutrition, physical activity at least 5 days a week and adherence to treatment to improve glycemic control, therefore it is important to educate the patient about food knowledge. The objective of this paper is to determine the improvement of dietary knowledge in patients with type 2 diabetes after an educational intervention, for which a descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study in 86 patients with this disease. Sociodemographic variables, nutritional knowledge and adherence to diet are considered with the instrument “Survey of knowledge and compliance with the diabetic diet”. The difference in medians before and after said intervention is determined using the Wilcoxon test for food knowledge and adherence to diet. This analysis was carried out with the statistical program SPSS v25. Regarding of the results, it is indicated that the mean age was 53.02+7.80 years. Average time of diagnosis of diabetes 9.84 + 6.12 years. Obesity 82.6%. Wilcoxon test for the median difference in the level of food knowledge before and after an educational intervention (z=-4.426, p=0.000010) and for adherence to the diet before and after the intervention (z=-2.043, p=0.041). Therefore, it is concluded: there is a statistically significant difference both in the median of food knowledge and in adherence to the diet before and after an educational intervention.
